We are pleased to convene our 6th biennial Jung in the Heartland Conference, providing both outstanding faculty and varied experiential offerings. Meaning unfolds through presentations, music, dialogue, art, dream work, poetry, massage, yoga, and ritual. We welcome individuals from all fields.

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

On Thursday, October 3, check-in opens at 3:00 p.m. and dinner is served from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. The opening session of the conference starts at 7:00 p.m. The program continues all day and evening on Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s session on October 6 closes the conference at noon, followed by lunch.

PRESENTERS AND THEIR PRESENTATIONS

THOMAS MOORE, PH.D.

Thomas Moore is the author of the number one New York Times bestselling book, Care of the Soul. In twenty-five other books he covers a variety of subjects, including bringing soul to personal life and culture, deepening spirituality, humanizing medicine, finding meaningful work, imagining sexuality with soul, and doing religion in a fresh way. A former Catholic monk and student of music composition, with a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Syracuse University, he has taught university. As a psychotherapist, he is influenced by C. G. Jung and James Hillman. As a non-aligned theologian, he has published his translation of the New Testament Gospels, Writing in the Sand: Jesus, Spirituality and the Soul of the Gospels; The Soul of Christmas; and most recently, Ageless Soul: The Lifelong Journey Toward Meaning and Joy. Dr. Moore lectures internationally, consulting for organizations and individuals.

THE MYTHS WE LIVE

Mythology refers to the stories we tell about trans-personal powers that we tap into for our everyday lives: love, fear, desire, individuality, power. Myth also refers to the powers themselves, as they course through our sense of self and our lives.

THE WISDOM AND BEAUTY OF THE GOSPEL MYTH

For centuries we have mistaken the genre of the Gospel stories about Jesus. When they are seen as mythology, in the deepest sense of the word, the Gospels come alive and speak to the human condition everywhere.

PATRICIA BERRY, PH.D.

Patricia Berry received her M.A. from St. John’s College in New Mexico and her Ph.D. from the University of Dallas. She has been a practicing Jungian Analyst since the completion of her training in 1975 at the C. G. Jung Institute, Zurich. Dr. Berry has served as president of the New England Society of Jungian Analysts and also as Training Director and then President of the Inter-Regional Society. While maintaining an online Analytical practice, she teaches and lectures widely, including as an adjunct professor at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, CA, where she resides. Her writings include Echo’s Subtle Body: Contributions to an Archetypal Psychology. From 1968 to 1991, while the companion and wife of James Hillman, Dr. Berry played an integral role in the early, formative years of Archetypal Psychology. Her present interests include the nature of change and of the unchanging – how, where, and in what ways these two realities interrelate.

MYTH AS A WAY OF SEEING

Mythic sensibility perceives something more than whatever is initially apparent. James Hillman referred to this kind of experience as “seeing through.” It can also be imagined as “seeing from within.”The psycho- dynamics of an individual moment, the dual dynamics of a relational or collective event, a political act, even a scientific notion such as Complexity Theory – all these, when viewed in mythic mode, expand in meaning.

Through this mythic sensibility, we will approach such topics as The Orphan, Self and Other, and Contemporary Origin Myths.

We are in a beautiful retreat center with trails, gardens, and a labyrinth. It is only 45 minutes from the St. Louis airport; the food is delicious, organic, and locally grown. Vegetarians and those requiring a gluten free menu are easily accommodated. All rooms are individual, private rooms with an individually controlled thermostat and private bath. Rooms and buildings are non-smoking.
